Katherine celebrated her 1-month birthday by taking her parents to Ikea to buy a new bookcase for her growing library. She was the perfect angel on the trip and slept the entire time. There aren't many times in life when the ideal behavior is to sleep through it. That certainly didn't work for me in college.
She's enjoyed our beautiful weather recently by going on walks with Rusty and sitting on our patio. She wishes her dad would stop embarassing himself by pretending to know the names of all the flowers in the neighborhood. Mom knows better than that.

Week 4
It's been a busy week 4 so far. Katherine's Grandma and Grandpa Thomason visited from Georgia. She had lots of quality time with them and they helped out a lot. It was great having them here and we were sorry to see them go.
Katherine, Nancy, and Rusty have all learned how to share the couch. There's sometimes even room for Dad. Getting up can be a challenge though.
I've been busy with work but luckily have been able to do all of it from home. I also had the thrill of playing hockey in the Verizon Center. It was the first time my parents have seen me play. Too bad we got our butts kicked.
We found out that Katherine likes taking baths but hates getting out of the tub. Or maybe she's upset that she's not receiving the full spa treatment.
So far Katherine has watched more basketball games in her 4 short weeks than most people do during their lifetimes. She's still learning the intricacies of the game such as how to turn your head to see the tv.
This week Katherine gets to watch her Dad try to do some home improvement projects around the house. Let's hope she doesn't learn her first word. Most likely it'll be of the four-letter variety.

Week 3
Katherine spent some quality time with her Grandma Butler, who tried to set a record for the most chores done over a single weekend. Watching her work can be exhausting. She was a huge help and I'm not sure what we would have done without her. It was great to see her again.
Katherine also got to go on her first walk. The weather is beautiful this week (highs in the upper 60s) and flowers are starting to bloom.
Rusty is adjusting to his new roommate and is making sure he receives equal attention. He went for a walk with Katherine today but he thought she was too slow.

We're Home!
The doctor decided to parole us! We're home and it's really nice to be here. Let's hope we get to stay a while.
Thursday Update
Nancy is doing great today and all the tests are coming back with good news but the doc wants to keep her in the hospital for one more day. We think they are obsessed with us and can't stand to see us leave. We were disappointed at the news because we were getting excited about going home tonight. Tomorrow marks our 12th day in the hospital.
Nancy's mom is in town and Sue kindly picked her up from the airport. I'm at home now for a bit to make sure we still have a house and to get some work done. I have a big project launching Sunday and I haven't had any time this week to work on it.
Speaking of which, be sure to play in the Washington Post's Tourney Tracker contest. Fill out a bracket and compete against local celebrities including Michael Wilbon, Tony Kornheiser, the Sports Junkies, DC Mayor Fenty, Caron Butler, Jason Campbell, and Tucker Carlson. Rusty Meets Katherine
On Sunday Rusty got to meet his new roommate for the first time. He was more excited about being petted than about meeting Katherine at first but he did manage to sneak in a few peeks and sniffs. Later on, when she started crying, Rusty hopped up immediately and came over to check on her. So they'll be inseparable before long but for now they're still checking each other out.

Week 2 Update
Sorry for the lack of updates. Here's a long overdue update and I'll post some photos later.
We arrived home on Saturday afternoon and it felt really nice to be out of the hospital. John and Sue brought Rusty home on Sunday to meet his new roommate. Rusty sniffed her a little bit but mostly kept his distance. However, whenever she cried, he came over to check on her. So we think they'll be best friends in no time at all.
After spending the weekend at home, we realized we missed the hospital and it's squadron of helpful nurses so we went back on Monday. Actually, Nancy was running a high fever on Monday morning and the doctor was concerned that an infection had set in.
After a battery of tests, they brought in a specialist on infectious diseases (the same thing that "House" does on tv) and he determined that Nancy had e-coli caused by a bladder infection which may have been triggered by the catheter. At least I think that's what he said.
He changed her antibiotics and Nancy's been doing great. She hasn't had a fever in 24 hours! There's a chance we can go home tomorrow but it may not be until Friday. They want to make sure we don't have to come back again anytime soon.
Except for a brief 36-hour intermission, we've spent the last 11 days in the hospital. The guy at the pizza counter in the cafeteria has seen a lot of me. Luckily today there are basketball games on tv all day and Man U vs Lille is on espn2.
Yesterday I loaded Katherine up in the bjorn and walked her around the hospital. She was a big hit. She's going to challenge Rusty for the title of cutest thing in the neighborhood.
Nancy's mom arrives tomorrow from Connecticut and rumor has it that she has a bag full of pink clothes for her only granddaughter.
UConn is playing now so I'd better take care of Katherine so her mom can yell at the tv.

Friday Update
Our first night with Katherine was a lot of fun. She watched the Yellow Jackets beat UNC with her dad and got to meet her Aunt Susan. We got better at deciphering her cries as the night went on. After seeing Nancy have to wake up every 2 hours to feed her, I'm really glad my nipples don't work. Maybe I should have kept that to myself.
Katherine has a really big appetite and is a good burper. She's almost as loud as Rusty (he's a good burper too). She had a big late-morning breakfast and dozed off on my chest.
We're just hanging out in the room. We're definitely going home tomorrow... assuming I can figure out how the car seat works.
It's a beautiful day in Arlington, VA. Blue sky and nearly 60 degrees. All the snow has melted now (or at least what we could see from our window).
Katherine has a really big appetite and is a good burper. She's almost as loud as Rusty (he's a good burper too). She had a big late-morning breakfast and dozed off on my chest.

Thursday Afternoon
Katherine's in our room now and hanging out with her mom and dad. She had the hiccups earlier but is now taking her second mid-late-afternoon nap. I just realized that you can click on a photo to see it's caption.
Thursday Update
Today Katherine gets released from the Newborn Care Unit and gets to stay with us in our room! We're very excited. Taking care of her is pretty easy when there's a fleet of nurses nearby. We're hoping they follow us home.
There's some confusion as to when we can go home. Our nurse today said it would be Saturday... but she also didn't know what day it is today. So we're going to get a second opinion.
Katherine is great at sleeping and hasn't cried much. We hope that continues.
Sue is coming by to visit tonight and meet her only niece. I hope she's not counting on us to even out her nephew-to-niece ratio because right now it's 10-to-1.
