In Katie's class, the parents write a birthday story that is read during their child's celebration day. For Katie, we wrote about bringing her home for the first time. It's one of her favorite story and she asks us to tell it again and again almost every night. The story is below. Enjoy!
Katie's Birthday Story
Once upon a time, Mommy and Daddy had a little baby. The doctor patted the baby's head and said, "What a cute little baby! What's her name?" Her Mommy and Daddy said, "Her name is Little Baby Katherine," because that's what we called her then.
When Mommy took a nap, Daddy put Katie in the baby carrier and walked to the cafeteria. Along the way, everyone stopped and patted her on the head. When they got to the cafeteria, Daddy ate a pizza with Katie still in the carrier. Her Daddy accidentally dropped a pepperoni on her head and said, "Sorry Little Baby Katherine!"
Then one day Mommy, Daddy, and Katie went home. Aunt Sue and Uncle John greeted them at the door. "Hi Katherine!", they said as they patted her on the head. Then her dog Rusty came running to the door to see his new friend. He licked her face and thought, "What a strange little dog." Her parents said, "Silly Rusty, she's not a dog! She's Little Baby Katherine!"
Three years later Little Baby Katherine has become Big Girl Katie. She likes to watch Dora, swing, ride her bike, and sing songs from the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. But most of all, she loves being with her Yellow Class friends.

Kite Festival
On Thursday Katie finally got to celebrate her birthday at school. It was postponed last month because she had the stomach flu. This time she started getting the sniffles a few days before her big day but was thankfully well enough to go to school. We didn't want her to have to postpone it again!
I took a little time off from work to go to her school to celebrate with her and her school friends. Nancy made cupcakes (by request from Katie) and all the kids enjoyed them, some of the cupcakes even made it into their mouths. Everyone sang happy birthday and Katie got to blow out a candle. Then her teacher, Miss Catherine, wrote Katie's symbol on the class' big birthday candle and gave her a collage that her school friends made for her. Katie was very happy.
On Saturday we went to the Smithsonian Kite Festival. We bought Katie a kite a few days earlier and she was very excited about flying it. We took the Metro to the Mall. One of Katie's favorite parts of the entire day was riding the long escalator down into the Metro station. When we got on the train, there was a seat available for her but she wanted to stand and hold the pole like the other adults.
The Kite festival is one of our favorite events because the entire 2 mile stretch of the Mall is filled with hundreds and hundres of kites. Some are way up high, above the Washington Monument. Others are so low that you have to keep an eye on them in case they buzz down. It's remarkable to see so many kites co-existing so well together. I'm not sure how all the strings didn't get tangled and no one got whacked on the head (that we saw, anyway).
Katie did great with her kite. The steady 5-10 mph breeze made it easy to launch and she got the hang of keeping the string tight. Occasionally her focus would wander and her kite would dive down, but we managed to avoid injuring anyone.
There was a great assortment of kites being flown. There were several pandas, a red baron triplane, some fancy Japanese-style kites that spun, a big eagle, and many, many others. We had fun pointing out our favorite ones.
After the Kite festival, we went to dinner in Old Town Alexandria with our neighbors Nikki, Randy, Sophie, and Cooper. Katie and Sophie were very silly during dinner, singing songs and giggling. Katie ate her entire pizza (kid size), which is unusual. We then got some ice cream and called it a night.
We've all been battling colds all weekend so today we're mostly taking it easy. Nancy and Katie walked down to Del Ray in the afternoon to participate in an Easter egg hunt. Katie had a great time and loved finding yummy chocolate in all the plastic eggs she found.

Katie's 3rd Birthday!
For Katie's 3rd birthday, we had a weekend full of activities planned. Nancy's mom came down on Monday and we were excited about a full week of fun and festivities. However, we hit a few bumps on the road. For starters, Katie came down with a bad stomach flu virus that knocked her out and created a lot of extra loads of laundry. Poor Katie had to cancel birthday brunch with Aunt Sue and Uncle John and her birthday party at preschool. Nancy brought the cupcakes in to school anyway. Then we had to postpone a birthday dinner with her neighborhood friends Cooper and Sophie.
Katie started feeling better on Friday but that night Nancy's mom and I caught the bug. It totally wiped us out and we slept all day Saturday while trying to work up enough courage to eat a cracker or a bowl of soup (I wouldn't try until Sunday). We managed to wake up long enough for Katie to open her presents and sing happy birthday. On Sunday we slept some more but started to feel better. And then on Monday Nancy's mom returned to Connecticut, without getting to do any of the things she had hoped to do with Katie.
But now everyone's healthy again and last weekend Katie had a birthday dinner with Cooper and Sophie. In the end, she enjoyed her birthday and all the presents, cards, and well-wishes she received. Thanks everyone for making it special!

Katie's Winter Olympics
Sorry for the lack of new posts lately. The last few weeks have been a blur of birthday parties, stomach flu, and work. We have a backlog of posts so I'll put a new one up each night this week. Let's start with the Winter Olympics.
Katie had a great time watching all the skiing, skating, twirling, curling, and sledding at the Olympics. And as you can see from the video below, she not only watched, she participated.
