Katie celebrated her 6th birthday last month! It's hard to believe she's already halfway to being a teenager. We're very proud of the fun young girl she's grown into and how well she's handled all the transitions so far... preschool, Peter, kindergarten... she's handled them all so well.
She got to celebrate this birthday with a special guest -- Grandma Thomason! She came up for a really nice stay with us. Katie's birthday celebration stretched for a full week. It started the weekend before her birthday with a trip down to Richmond to see the musical Mary Poppins! She had a lot of fun and really enjoyed watching it with Grandma (as well as eating frozen yogurt with Grandma afterwards).
Then, on Katie's birthday, she had a celebration in her class and a surprise lunch visit by Nancy and Grandma. Later we celebrated at one of Katie's favorite restaurants -- Luna in Shirlington. Then we went home to open presents and eat the yummy chocolate chip cake that Nancy made.
And the weekend after her birthday we had a nice visit from Aunt Sue and Theo. We opened presents, ate yummy cupcakes, and then went to the St Patrick's Parade in Old Town Alexandria. It was probably the coldest day of the year but we persevered and had fun, despite the chilly wind. A few days later Katie got to go shopping with Grandma to pick out a birthday present. Katie had a lot of fun shopping with Grandma but had trouble making up her mind (which is understandable). She ended up getting a doll's head with long hair that she can style.
All in all, it was a fun birthday and Katie is very thankful for all the great presents, cards, and calls she received from people near and far.

All dressed up and ready to see Mary Poppins.

At the nice Landmark Theater in Richmond, built in 1926 when people were apparently much smaller and didn't need as much room for their knees between seats.

Katie enjoys her birthday dinner at Luna, a restaurant that Nancy and I have been eating at together for 14 years.

The birthday girl is ready to get the party started.

Waiting patiently to eat the birthday cake.

The sugar from the cake kicks in and the kids start dancing.

The sleeping bag undergoes more testing by Katie's Dad (it's important to test things thoroughly).

Katie opens up her present from Theo (a squirt gun) and naturally targets Peter first.

Aunt Sue and Theo sing happy birthday to Katie.

Huddling for warmth with Grandma at the St Patrick's Parade in Old Town.

Peter watches the parade with Theo.

Theo, Katie, and Grandma cheer one of the many bagpipe bands.

Theo is ready to march in the next parade.

Happy Birthday Sweetie!
