Snow Photos

Here are some long overdue photos from our Snowpacolypse. On Friday and Saturday (Feb 5-6), we received about 26-29 inches. A few days later, we received another 8-10 inches in blizzard conditions (strong winds of 30-40 miles per hour). It caused whiteout conditions around D.C. that shut the city down.

Katie loved playing in the snow and helping her Mom shovel. She got to play with her neighbors Cooper, Sophie, baby Ellie, Sasha, and Cameron. She made snow angels, snow balls, went sledding, and ran around.

Our favorite meteorologist, Bob Ryan, calculated that the snow currently on the ground in the DC area weighs 3 trillion pounds! That's 3 times more than the weight of everyone on earth (assuming 6.8 billion people weigh an average of 150 pounds).

In more relatable terms, we have 7,000 pounds of snow on our roof, or 3.5 tons. That's like having 2 average sized cars sitting on it (or 45 people)! We're glad we had our roof replaced last year! In all, we have 21,000 pounds of snow on our property. When it melts, it'll turn into 562 gallons of water, or enough drinking water for a person for 3 years.

Most of the snow has not melted yet, which is a good thing. A quick melt would cause massive flooding. We're supposed to creep above freezing a few times this week which will help create a slow melt.

We still have over 2 feet on the ground but now it's hard packed and a little icy which is perfect for sledding. Katie went to the best sledding hill in the neighborhood yesterday and had fun... until she made a snow angel on the sledding path and got upset when some boys ran over it.

Last night we went to a Japanese Hibachi restaurant. In true Katie fashion, she wasn't bothered by the big flames shooting into the air or the knife juggling. The only thing that bothered her was when the chef threw an egg in the air and caught it in his pocket. She said that was wrong.
