Katie's First Fourth

Big news! Katie rolled over last Sunday! She had come close in the last week but finally figured out the final step. She does it all the time now. The only problem is that she can't roll back and doesn't like being on her stomach for a long time. So we'll have to flip her back over only to have her roll back a few minutes later. She's our little turtle.

Last week Katie went for a checkup and 4 more shots. She didn't cry as much this time, according to her mom. She weighs 16 pounds now and is 25.25 inches long. Both are in the 90th percentile. Nancy is going to write a letter to Geno Auriemma about her. Using fun statistical techniques like gaussian distributions, standard deviations, and z-scores, we figured out that she's on track to be 5'7" tall. That's 1 inch taller than her mom. And I thought Americans were getting shorter.

She's starting to get her bottom teeth now which has made her a little fussy. We have some cold teething toys which help (especially on these hot days) and Nancy has been giving her Tylenol. She loves sucking her hands, sometimes both at the same time. Actually, she likes putting anything in her mouth. She likes grabbing my hand and trying to put it in her mouth. She's pretty strong. The other day we were looking at the tree in our backyard and she wanted to find out what the leaves taste like. She's very thorough in her analysis.

On the Fourth of July we barbequed chicken and had a nice dinner. That was the first time I cooked the chicken long enough which was a relief because I nearly ruined the steak the night before. When the corn catches on fire, that's usually a sign that things aren't going quite as planned.

After dinner we stepped outside to watch the fireworks with our neighbors. From out street we can see the fireworks at the Washington Monument but can't hear them. We thought that would be perfect for Katie but she decided she would rather eat instead, much to her mom's chagrin. So we saw about half the fireworks outside and the other half inside on tv.
