At Cape Cod, we were lucky enough to be joined by my parents. It was great having them up for the week and they seemed to enjoy their first visit to the Cape. Nancy's mom, and her sisters and their families came too. It was really enjoyable having everyone there and Nancy's mom was very gracious.
Our week started with Peter's baptism on Sunday and celebratory lunch afterwards. On Monday we hung out at the beach and then I went with my parents and Katie to Chatham, a cute Cape town. There are lots of seals around there and, consequently, lots of sharks. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) we couldn't find a parking spot to get out and see them.
On Tuesday, A funny incident occurred in the afternoon. I was driving with my parents and Katie to the hot dog stand when Katie said she saw Mommy walking near Sundae School. We all told her she was imagining things or was mistaken. But it turns out she was right! Nancy walked there to pick up the cake for my birthday! Katie knows best.
Later, Aunt Roberta visited with her daughter Patty. We then met up with
On Wednesday we celebrated my birthday by going whale watching. It was amazing and we saw lots of whales. My mom even got to see one jump out of the water. Afterwards, we ate yummy ice cream cake. It was a very nice day and I was very lucky to share it with everyone. My parents have been there for all my milestone birthdays so far: 0, 16, 21, 30, and now 40.
On Thursday we sadly had to say goodbye to my parents. They wisely fled before Hurricane Irene got closer. We were not as smart. On Friday Katie went with Nancy and her mom to a Build-a-Bear type place. The tooth fairy left her a coupon for a bear after Katie lost her first tooth on the Cape (it was a big week).
Saturday we packed up and left. The hurricane was getting close and our reservation had expired. The parking lot was nearly deserted. On the way to Connecticut, we hit really heavy rain. At one point we pulled out our phones to check the weather radar to make sure we weren't actually in the middle of the hurricane. Fortunately, it was just the fringe.
We stayed Saturday night in Naugatuck. The hurricane was a tropical storm by the time it hit us late at night (the worst stuff seemed to be after 3am). But it still drenched the area and caused lots of flooding. Luckily, Nancy's mom's house handled it well. We lost power during the night and it wasn't restored until later in the week. By late afternoon on Sunday it was over and the sun came out for a bit. On Monday we packed up and returned home, stopping by Scranton for lunch with Sara's family at the slowest Chinese restaurant on earth.
Our visit to the Cape was full of big events and it was really special having both our families there. It was only the second time that Katie has been with both sets of grandparents at the same time. The weather at the Cape was perfect. The days were in the mid-70's with low humidity. I may be convinced that the beautiful New England summers are worth the harsh winters... maybe. The nice weather certainly made it easier for me to run 25 miles while I was there (not all at once).
So it was an extra-special visit to the Cape this year and we thank everyone for making it so memorable. There are lots of photos below and even more here.
