July 2011

July has been full of fun summer activities so far. It started with Katie getting a new haircut. We had a picnic in Old Town by the river and played Duck-Duck-Goose and "Lobo" (a game Katie made up that involves a wolf, or lobo in Spanish, chasing someone). Then we watched fireworks for 3 nights in a row. The Scheniders visited for a week and we had a lot of fun with them. Then we saw more fireworks for Alexandria's birthday.

Katie has stayed cool this month by going to her favorite spray park in Arlington. She's also taking ice skating lessons with her Dad. She's doing great in the class even though she holds on to her Dad more than she needs to. But each time she skates a little more confidently by herself. I think by the end of the 8 week class she'll be doing just fine on her own.

On Friday I took the day off to have a Daddy Day with Katie. We had lunch at Chick-Fil-A, saw "Winnie the Pooh" at the movie theater, went swimming, played at the park, kicked the soccer ball, and had dinner at the Del Ray Pizzeria.

Saturday I went on my longest run of the year so far (7 miles!), then we celebrated Christmas in July in Old Town. Katie got to talk to Santa and Mrs. Claus, who were wearing bathing suits. They talked to her about the importance of listening and learning new things in school. She asked for a rocking horse for Christmas, which completely surprised us. She later said she wants one because Theo has one. Nancy grilled tuna kabobs for dinner and then we walked down to the park in Del Ray for an outdoor movie, "How to Train Your Dragon." The movie was very good and it was a great night to be outdoors with our neighbors.

Sunday we went to the National Zoo for a birthday part of a friend of Katie's. She had fun making crafts, eating cupcakes, and touring the Amazonia. Peter and I went to see the tigers (who were hungry and roaring) and the lions (who were sleepy). There are 7 new lion cubs. They are less than a year old but they already look like teenagers, especially as they laid around and slept. Then Peter and I watched the giant sting rays, fish, and big turtles in the Amazon exhibit. He loved watching them. We then met up with Katie and Nancy and walked up to see the monkeys. That night we had dinner at one of our favorite local Tex-Mex/Salvadoran restaurants, Los Tios.

Peter's been growing so fast this month. He's sitting up regularly and rolls over occasionally. He loves to laugh, especially with his sister. His face lights up every time he sees Katie.

Pics are below. More pics are here.
