Katie had a big weekend. Grandma Butler, Aunt Sara, Uncle Paul, and her 3 PA Cousins came down to see her. On Friday we all went to the zoo and saw the pandas eating, an elephant peeing (it was like a hydrant), and an octopus playing with a toy.
On Saturday, Katie was baptized in a small, simple ceremony by Father Scalia (the son of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia). Katie's dad learned that the correct response to the baptism questions during the ceremony is not "mmm-hmmm". Katie cried a little bit but not too much. Afterwards, her godparents Sue and John treated everyone to a yummy lunch at Chadwick's in Old Town. We walked along the river after lunch and found a balloon twister guy. He asked Matthew what he wanted him to make and Matthew said a heart. The guy said, "You don't want a heart" and made him a sword instead. He must sell insurance during the week.
After lunch, Mark and I went for probably the slowest run he's ever been on. When we got back to the house, Paul asked how far we ran (2 miles) and at what pace (12 minutes). He paused for a second and then asked, "12 minutes? Was that your total time or per mile?" Thanks.
We then caravaned to Sue and John's farm to eat hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill, play horseshoes, visit the chickens, and gawk at the enormous tree that fell on their property. We then went to the Great Meadow to see some polo. It was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed it. I almost got decapitated when I was walking near the fence while they were warming up. One of the players decided to blast the ball right at my head. Luckily it caught the top of the fence.
On Sunday I took the boys and Paul to the Billy Goat Trail to climb on some rocks and burn off some energy. Everyone did great on the rocky trail and we all came back in one piece. We all wiped out at various times but nothing too serious. That night everyone (except Nancy and Katie) went to my hockey game and saw us play our best game of the year. We won 7-1. Paul videotaped the game and I'll post some highlights as soon as I figure out how to speed up the footage to make it look like we're not a bunch of old men.
On Monday we toured the Capitol building with the worst tour guide ever. During the tour, he 1) never spoke above a mumble, 2) got lost, 3) led us up the wrong stair case, 4) skipped some parts of the tour, 5) got yelled at by security for not paying attention to them, 6) told us nothing informative, and 7) smelled. The poor kid was an intern from UVA in Jim Moran's office but he should rethink politics as a career. He should learn how to make balloon animals instead.
It was really nice to see everyone over the weekend. Nancy's mom did a great job digging out the pesky bamboo in our backyard and putting new plants in. Sara and Paul and the boys were very accomodating and never complained about having to sleep on our basement floor. Sara showed off her parenting skills by keeping Katie smiling and laughing all weekend. Paul kept the boys entertained and on their best behavior. John and Sue kindly hosted the baptism lunch, dinner, and evening entertainment. And, of course, Nancy kept everything running smoothly and made the weekend a big success.
