Our initial plan was for us to wear our cross-country skis and pull Katie in her sled but the guy that worked there told us (in a nice way) that we were idiots. I half-expected him to say, "You're not from around here, are you?"
Instead, I wore snowshoes and pulled the sled while Nancy wore skis. It started out a little bumpy. Katie was grumpy and I felt a bit like her horse having to run at a gallop and pull her sled to keep her happy. Luckily she didn't have a whip. But once we got moving, everyone cheered up and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery. We saw at least three dogs on the trail running along with their human companions on skis.
We took a break for lunch and dropped Katie off for her first ever stay at a day care. We were a little nervous and hoped she would do ok. We decided that I should drop her off to minimize the separation anxiety. She was very shy when I left her but she eventually loosened up and had a good time. She even took a nap! We need to ask the staff how they managed to do that. When we picked her up, we could see her on the monitor keeping herself busy by feeding her baby and wrapping her up in a blanket. It was very cute.
While she was in day care, Nancy and I went back to the cross-country skiing center. This time I wore skis instead of snowshoes. It's much easier to glide than to walk. We skiied for another few hours and when we returned to the car, it started to rain. Perfect timing!
For dinner we stayed on the resort. A live band was playing old Buddy Holly and Hank Williams songs in the restaurant and Katie loved it! She was dancing in her high chair and playing "air drums". Afterward, we saw something really cool -- a torch parade! At least 100 skiers carried torches down the ski slope (which was totally dark). It created a neat effect and when they all gathered at the bottom of the slope, they extinguished their torches in the snow right as the fireworks started. It was quite a spectacle. Unfortunately, the loud booms were too much for Katie and she wanted to go inside. But we got to see most of it.
Here are some photos of our first full day at Okemo. More photos are here.

Nancy skis towards the haziness.

Nancy zips along the trail while Katie's Clydesdale huffs and puffs and plods along (and pauses to take photos).

Katie brought her baby doll along for the ride. She loved eating the snow. If you look closely, you can see some snow in her right hand.

"Faster, Daddy!"

Here's one of the dogs we saw with a skier along the trails.

Katie and her Nordic Mom.

Katie and her Clydesdale.

Katie dwarfed by snow banks.

A nice moment for mother and daughter.

A nice view of the Okemo mountain with the sun trying to peek through.

Me "zipping" down a hill.

These are the downhill slopes we're tackling tomorrow.
