The festivities started the week before with her celebration day at school. Nancy was the co-op parent and made cupcakes using apple sauce instead of eggs (one of the kids has an egg allergy). Then Katie's Grammy arrived and spent the weekend with us. One day they went to the National Aquarium in DC. It's hidden in the Commerce Building's basement and we kept forgetting about it as something to do. But Katie finally got to see it on the windiest day of the year (gusts up to 60 miles per hour). She liked the alligators, sharks, octopus, and even the snakes. Nancy didn't like the snakes.
On Sunday Katie woke up and ran downstairs to se her presents. The first thing she saw was her new easel with a chalkboard, whiteboard, and roll of paper for painting and drawing. Then she opened some of her presents. Later Theo, Aunt Sue, and Uncle John came over to join the party. We walked down to the park and played for a while. It was a beautiful day that gave us hope that Spring was here (it turned cold a few days later). We returned to the house, opened more presents, and ate some yummy pizza from Lost Dog. She had a nice webchat with her Grandma and Papa in Georgia.
All in all, it was a fun weekend and Katie thanks everyone for all the generous gifts and cards she received. We were relieved that her birthday had come so that she would stop telling us what she wants for her birthday. Little did we know that would start talking about her 5th birthday right away.
In 2 weeks we're having a party with some of her friends at her favorite place -- the soft playroom (a racquetball court converted to a playroom for kids).

Katie opens a present from Grandma and Papa. Since then she's watched the movie at least twice and told her doctor all about it at her checkup.

Katie and her new ukelele.

Katie helped me walk Rusty and told everyone we saw that it was her birthday.

Theo and Katie swing together.

Theo looks like he's debating a legal point.

Katie's friend Ellie was at the park and had fun playing with Katie (we think).

Katie opens her new jewelry box with a twirling ballerina figurine.

Somehow she was able to guess what this present was.

Theo gave her a ladybug jacket to match her ladybug boots and ladybug umbrella.
