The river has been especially turbulent in the past week because of the hurricane. It was amazing to see how fast and dangerous the water was. Someone trying to make it through there would have no chance. A few kayakers paddled around the very bottom of the rapids but didn't go very far up. One brave one went a little farther up than the others which was fun to watch.
Now we're back at the house and very tired. We're all expecting to have sore legs when we wake up tomorrow!
UPDATE: Before the hike, Katie created a checklist of things we should look for during the hike. I added it below because we thought it was very cute and clever.

Katie's checklist of things to look for along the hike. The items are: a black cat (or dog), the river, a tree, a frog, a heron, deer (those are antlers), and an acorn. The deer is checked because on the way home we saw a carcass and told Katie we saw one but didn't give her any more details. Luckily, she didn't ask any questions about it.

Hiking to one of the scenic overlooks along the river.

At the first scenic overlook.

A view of the rocky rapids. The cliffs on the other side are in Maryland.

I'm pretty sure I'm not threatening to push her into the river.

Time to hike back before the sun goes down.

Katie tries out a kayak at the visitor's center, on dry land fortunately.
